A big draw to the community is the housing, access to recreational areas and the area schools. The Alpine Union School District features three elementary schools and one middle school. Alpine Union School District's class sizes are below state guidelines at every grade level. In addition, Alpine Union School District's class size averages are among the lowest in San Diego County.

The first people to enjoy Alpine's fine climate were the Kumeyaay Indians, who lived in the area around 1,000 years ago. They are one of the many tribes whom the early Catholic Missionaries grouped under the name Diegueno.
